Erectile dysfunction is a major challenge faced by many men today. Many young and middle-aged men fail to acknowledge ED because they live in disbelief that only those of older age can suffer from it. However, that not being the case as erectile dysfunction can be caused by many factors related to health conditions, emotional problems, relationship problems, prescribed medication, tobacco, drugs, or alcohol consumption.
But the good thing is Erectile Dysfunction is curable.
Even though the suggested Erectile dysfunction treatments may involve medications and even surgery, there are still many remedies that one can follow to minimize the effects of ED to absolute null.
A person suffering from ED may experience the following effects.
- Reduced sexual desire
- Trouble getting an erection
- Trouble keeping an erection
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by many different reasons, such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Lack of sufficient rest/ sleep, consumption of tobacco, and alcohol. Even some medication prescribed by a doctor for treating any particular health condition can cause erectile dysfunction (does not mean one should stop taking them).
Surprisingly erectile dysfunction can not only be caused by the above reasons but also by mental health problems, such as stress, depression, anxiety, and relationship problems. Thus, it is suggested to reach out to a doctor to examine your case carefully.
Erectile dysfunction can create a negative impact on the life of a person, if not taken care of, not only leading to an unsatisfactory sex life but also low self-esteem, relationship problems, and high anxiety. ED also results in a low fertility level in men.
Based upon a study, published in May 2014 in The Journal of Sexual Medicine it was concluded that some men were successfully able to treat erectile dysfunction by changing their lifestyle to a healthy one, maintaining an exercise regime, losing weight, consuming a balanced diet, and taking enough sleep/ rest.
Experts have stated that treating erectile dysfunction on your own through the medication, without consulting a doctor, is very unsafe. As many of these medicines do have many side effects.
Following are few ways to treat erectile dysfunction
Exercise
Exercising regularly is not only proven to be effective in improving overall health but also beneficial for treating ED as it improves blood pressure and blood flow.
“There are many lifestyle changes that are erectile dysfunction remedies, but among them, exercise is the ED treatment that can have the greatest impact,” says Zachary R. Mucher, MD, a urologist in Sugar Land, Texas. “Exercise works on several fronts to combat the development of ED and help reverse it once it has become a problem.”
Exercise helps in improving the blood flow, which plays an important role in having a strong erection plus it also improves blood pressure by increasing the level of nitric oxide in blood vessels, which is the same way Viagra works, Zachary adds.
Sleep
As stated earlier, the lack of sleep contributes to erectile dysfunction. While sleeping, beneficial hormones are released which aids in increasing libido and thus improving sex life.
Poor sleep patterns negatively impact the sex life of a person. Based upon a review published in the journal Brain Research it has been emphasized that there is a very strong connection between the level of sex hormones like testosterone and sleep. It has been observed that testosterone level increases with improved sleep and lower levels are linked with sexual dysfunction.
Thus, one should adhere to a consistent sleep schedule and can help ensure that those signals are clear and consistent.
Quit Smoking
Smoking contributes to erectile dysfunction by blocking or narrowing the arteries thus, limiting blood supply to the penis. As smoking causes narrowing of blood vessels many people have experienced great improvement just by quitting it.
For many men, just quitting smoking resulted as a remedy for erectile dysfunction, particularly when the cause of ED was related to vascular disease.
Quitting smoking even improves low libido and helps in achieving a stronger erection.
Maintaining a healthy diet
The diet and the foods that one consumes can directly impact erectile dysfunction, Dr. Mucher says. A healthy diet that includes fruit, vegetables, whole grains, refined grains can decrease the risk for Erectile dysfunction.
A healthy diet also helps in treating erectile dysfunction in an in-direct way, as it helps in maintaining healthy body weight. In a study, it has been concluded that a man with a 42-inch waist is 50% more likely to suffer from ED than one with a 32-inch waist. As it is known that obesity increases the risk of vascular disease and diabetes, which are two major factors that contribute to erectile dysfunction.
A diet that includes fruits & vegetables which are rich in antioxidants, is good for the overall health of a person. Such a diet also helps in improving the sex life and enhancing the libido.
