Abamune Tablets belong to a class of drugs called Antiretrovirals. Used in the treatment of HIV, it contains Abacavir as its active ingredient.

Uses

Abamune Tablets are widely used as a part of antiretroviral therapy to treat HIV infections. It reduces the severity of HIV infection, stopping it from progressing to AIDS as well as keeps the viral load low.

How do the Abamune Tablets work?

Abacavir, the active ingredient found in Abamune Tablets, is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (RTI) that prevents viral replication. It competes with the viral molecules to bind to the viral DNA. Once bound with the viral DNA it prevents replication of the virus.

Side Effects

The commonly reported side effects of Abamune Tablets are,

Fatigue
Headache
Nausea
Vomiting
Otitis media or ear infections
Nasal infection
Throat infection
Skin rash
Fever
Chills
Abnormal dreams
Dizziness

These side effects usually go away on their own without any medical attention. Give your body some time to acclimate to the tablets. If the side effects persist or tend to worsen, consult your doctor.

As Abamune Tablets cause dizziness, it is advised to not drive or operate heavy machinery.

People with a particular allele have been found to display hypersensitivity to Abacavir. Undergo a pre-therapy screening before taking the medication. Hypersensitivity reactions include fever, nausea and diarrhea.

These symptoms are often confused with that of AIDS/HIV and hypersensitivity often goes undetected till very late.

People with a history of liver disease must take caution with this medication as it might sometimes worsen the condition. Your doctor will decide if the benefits of this medication outweigh its risks before prescribing it.
